Subtle Clues

     The streets were busy and it took a lot of effort to drive from La Vucciria onto the cross street. It was very wide. Soon Ami turned onto another narrow street. It was like a confusing claustrophobic maze of tall balconied buildings with clothes lines and graffiti on the gateways, walls and roll down metal garages. The streets wound their way back to another square where it was a little wider and Caterina could see the sky. She breathed a sigh of relief as they pulled to a stop in front of an awning that opened out into a dining patio of tables and chairs. It was busy. Díon opened Catarina’s door and she stepped out.

     “Welcome to my mother’s Casa Nicu.” He smiled at her. “Are you ready to taste real food?”

     Catarina laughed, “Of course.” She looked at Ami who was also smiling. And then realized that this woman too was in the photograph. She knew that smile.

  “Don’t forget your mother’s fish!” Ami said, opening the trunk.

     Dion spread his arms and said, “This is my Little Sicily. My mother will love you! Ami, we can bring everything in to stay fresh.”

     “Thank you, Díon.” Ami said, smirking at his bravado.
